Bleeding Gums Are Not Normal

Bleeding Gums Are Not Normal

Pink on the toothbrush is so common that many people treat it as part of brushing. It isn't. Bleeding is the gum's only way of telling you something is wrong.

What it usually means

In most cases the answer is gingivitis - inflammation from plaque sitting along the gum line. The fix at this stage is straightforward: a professional cleaning and better daily technique, and the gums recover fully within weeks.

Why waiting is the mistake

Left alone, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the inflammation moves below the gum line and starts dissolving the bone that holds your teeth. That stage is treatable but not reversible - which is why the bleeding phase is the cheap, easy moment to act.

What good daily care looks like

  • Brush twice a day along the gum line, softly - scrubbing harder is not the answer.
  • Clean between the teeth once a day with floss or interdental brushes; this is where most bleeding starts.
  • Don't stop cleaning a bleeding area - gentle, consistent cleaning is exactly what settles it.

When to come in

Bleeding that persists beyond two weeks of good home care, bad breath that won't clear, gums pulling away from teeth, or any loose tooth - book a visit. Smokers and people with diabetes should be checked sooner rather than later.

A cleaning appointment at our Obhur branch takes under an hour - your gums will tell you the difference within days.

The smoker's trap

Smoking hides gum disease - nicotine constricts vessels so gums bleed LESS while the disease progresses faster. Smokers should never wait for bleeding as their warning sign.

Diabetes and your gums

Gum disease and blood sugar push each other in both directions: uncontrolled sugar feeds the inflammation, and treating the gums measurably improves HbA1c. If you have diabetes, a six-month cleaning schedule is part of your sugar control.
