Your Child's First Dental Visit

Your Child's First Dental Visit

Parents are often surprised by the recommended timing: the first dental visit belongs at the first tooth - and no later than the first birthday.

Why so early?

Early childhood caries can start the moment teeth appear, and bottle habits, night feeding, and juice do their damage quietly. An early visit is mostly a conversation: feeding, fluoride, teething, and how to clean tiny teeth without a wrestling match.

What actually happens

A first visit is short and gentle - a lap exam with the child facing the parent, a look at the teeth and gums, and time for your questions. No drills, no surprises. The real goal is that the clinic becomes a familiar place before anything ever hurts.

Setting up the habit

  • Brush twice daily with a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste from the first tooth.
  • No bottles in bed - milk pooling around teeth overnight is the classic cavity story.
  • Keep juice rare and inside meals, not sipped through the day.

If your child is older and has never been

That is completely fine - the best time is simply now. Pediatric dentists are trained for nervous first-timers at every age.

Fluoride, simply

Fluoride varnish at the clinic twice a year plus the right toothpaste smear at home is the most evidence-backed cavity prevention there is. The amounts are tiny and safe - the caries they prevent are neither.

What if the first visit finds a cavity?

Baby teeth get treated too: they hold space for adult teeth and infections in them hurt just as much. Early lesions can often be arrested without drilling at all.
